The article I read about Vanderbilt's infamous words was essentially this:
-------------------------
Vanderbilt was busy when a reporter asked him for an interview.

Vanderbilt apparently said that he was busy and could not spare the time.

The reporter then asked again and said something like "I have a public which demands that you take the time to be interviewed!"

Vanderbilt replied "YOU AND YOUR PUBLIC be damned."
-------------------------
That's quite a bit different from "the public be damned"
