I don't recall Portola ever having an E unit. I vaguely remember UP getting one from CNW back during that timeframe.
I asked about the A-B-A set in the original post because they looked so special on UP passenger trains and I would think that the maintenance would be no more difficult that that of ordinary diesels so they could be out and about on a more regular basis (unlike steam).
