Does anyone know how much electricity a mag-lev system actually needs as opposed to what conventional electric railroads including HSR use? It seems to me that levitating a few hundred tons would take an enormous amount of power. And when you add the cost of building these systems and the infrastructure needed to operate them (new power plants, lines, etc.), it all sounds like it's a colossal waste of money just for the wow factor.
