That's the reason the unions got the "Boiler Safety Act" passed many moons ago.

It boils down to ..."the carrier has to provide a safe place to work....". The carriers still try to ignore their part in this and the employee usually has to hire an attorney. Not a regular one but one that knows "FELA" law. That's Federal Employee Liability Act. The attorneys are only allowed to charge so much for a client.

Read up on it and it will answer a lot of questions.

Also, the unions did a lot for workers. Did you know it was the unions that got the Railroad Retirement Act passed? They knew the carriers didn't care anything for their employees and the BLE wanted to provide a retirement for their engineers BUT didn't trust the carriers to manage it. They went to the feds and asked them if they would manage it for them and they agreed. We were way ahead of the SSA act. We paid more in but also receive a bigger pension.
