Scales continue to be used to determine the weight of cars (many rates are based on lading weight) and to ensure a car does not weight more than its rated capacity or the maximum permissible weight over the route it is to travel. Knowing the total weight of the individual cars in a train is important to determine breaking distance, to determine how much locomotive power is needed and to ensure proper weight distribution for train handling.
