The beginnings of the modern Steam Preservation Movement ( albeit unsuccessfully ) could possibly be traced to the efforts of Ron Nixon and other Northern Pacific railroaders ( perhaps Jim Frederickson as well ? ) in trying to save NP 2626, AKA Timken 1111 -- The Four Aces demonstrator. As the first 4-8-4 Northern - type steam locomotive it was significant; as a roller bearing - equipped steam locomotive it would have been a great candidate for preservation / restoration. Alas, small minds and cutting torches ruled the day.
