All of MRL's remaining SD45s are 20Cyl. My surmise is that to the MRL horsepower was more important that fuel economy given that the big task for these units was getting heavy trains over the Rockies. Mullan Pass helper sets would have probably required an additonal unit if they were 3000HP 16Cyl units.
