From the foto of Fremont underneath the terminal towards Mission it does not look all that radically different from the old Eastbay Terminal in the same spot. Higher, fancier, no birds nor nets. Trolley support poles instead of eyebolts on the building itself.
That's a pretty hefty crack. Since there are 2 closeby my totally no-engineering knowledge guess would be considerably more stress being produced by the design at that location than planned.
But my guess also is that when it comes to blame it will be placed on human error by a low-level employee. The butler what done it.
