Oh, good grief. This is a case of a poor decision, not a manifestation of political political views. Centrists, conservatives, libertarians and those without any strongly held political beliefs make questionable decisions.
Have you met those who planned the marathon? If not, how do you know they are "ex-California liberals?" There is nothing in the news article indicating the marathon route planners' political beliefs. Yes, they may be liberal, by virtue of living in Portland, OR. However, they could also be centrist, conservative or even politically indifferent.
What about all of the marathons which are held without any problems in other cities with a predominant liberal culture? Would you attribute the success of those marathons to the competency of liberals in those cities?
