From the book CAJON - Rail Passage to the Pacific, by Chard Walker:
" Working Westward from Barstow, the line was double - tracked as far as Cottonwood by 1910. The Portion between Summit and Cottonwood ( by then re-named Hicks ) remained single - track until 1924,... ".
Hicks is now named Hodge, and is MP 11.6 West of Barstow. So the Frost flyover was built in 1924. The scarcity of Joshua Trees in the area likely has more to do with the lower elevation; Joshua Trees like cooler, higher elevations like Cima Hill and their namesake National Monument.
