We mostly burned wood in the "caboose" stove at the pad, and only did the "coal" thing a few times, just because we had some. And, yes you had to use a wood fire, or a "fusee", to get the coal going. SP got some of this caboose coal "bagged" up back then, so you could just throw a couple a bags on an old cupola caboose, and you were done.
