The message is obvious: in a very large country with a legacy installed base of 5'6" railways Delhi's tech experts(equivalent of Bechtel or PB)selected standard gauge and rejected Bechtel gauge even if it is all around. Eye-opening.
Clearly India has a domestic railway equipment industry specializing in 5'6" gauge rolling stock and likely for the time being not much in the export business. But if India starts to produce standard gauge equipment for the international market in quantity(and it may very well given its huge wage advantage)standard gauge would likely in time become the primary vehicle for their state of the art stuff. At that point you could see some new standard gauge lines popping up in India, particularly if interchange with other countries develops. Indian Railways has the resources to add standard gauge, as with the new line in Ethiopia adjacent to legacy metre gauge.
Meantime BART is a white elephant and its management should straightaway start the process of regauging to standard. No Bechtel gauge to Sac sans bathrooms - who needs a botched NYC subway out in the middle of farm fields.
