Gas-fired boilers can run on oil. Was done 50+ years ago and can still be done. Steam power plants in the mid-20th century in California were mostly gas-fired but all had oil tanks on site for times during the winter when gas supply was interrupted to keep everybody's heaters on. These days, it would be more difficult to do that because of emission regs, but it's technically feasible.
