The tragic accident caused a panic law to be passed that in some ways seemed to be a way to buy votes from unions as reduced crew hours will require more trainmen be hired and more signal maintainers to be hired as well. Short lines are just gonna be out of luck, also say good-bye to main line steam as well. The costs of this will reach into the billions --- just so people can get away with not paying attention. Yet all of this still seems to overlook what caused the people to die (yes, running the red signal was the cause) but very poor passenger car design allowed telescoping to occur, which is a problem that was solved long ago in heavy weight and stream line car designs. Passenger deaths could have been reduced or eliminated had the car they were riding in had sufficient buffer plates to prevent telescoping. Thousands of trucks carrying hazmat are about to start hitting the hiways, all without the benefit of PTC, without benefit of strict hours of service oversight, without double walled tanks and much more---all because short lines and class one branch lines are not gonna be able to justify the expense of PTC and will simply not move that traffic any longer, and as the result of the loss of traffic, more lines are going to be abandoned. Laws passed in panic, always cause more troubles than they solve.
