In the late 1940's Espee's San Joaquin Daylight hit a loaded gas tanker in Kingsburg,CA., with deaths and injuries the result. I recall California was one of the first states to require petroleum tank trucks to stop at all railroad crossings, with or without lights and / or gates. This law was later extended to any vehicle carrying a placarded amount of Hazardous Materials.
