Espee's Modoc Line did not serve Reno, NV., directly, but only by accessing The Overland Route at Fernley, NV., at which point any trains would have to back - track West to Reno. After 1962 this became even more problematic as Espee Modoc Line trains began using Western Pacific tracks between Flanigan and Weso,NV.( near Winnemucca ), which would have required even more back - tracking West to reach Reno.
Realistically speaking, Amtrak would be giving up service to The Dalles & Pendleton,OR., as well as Boise,ID., to provide duplicate service between Portland & Klamath Falls,OR., then service to Alturas & Wendel,CA, with perhaps a connecting bus to Susanville ???
