Bare Table Monster Trains?

A new one for me. While sitting at the Newberry Springs Mtn. View crossing (MP 725/Needles Sub) today at about 3PM, a westbound bare table with two units pulling past by. Nothing unusual, but then a mid train single DPU, followed by a larger number of baretables, followed by a final single DPU. I was caught completely by surprise, but I'd guess this guy was 10 to 12,000 feet. Never saw a bare table DPU configuration.
