The "watchman" was a Style B semaphore. It would go to stop if there was a fire on the bridge. You can see the silver pipe at the east end of the bridge. Just one blade, either "Stop" or "Proceed". I think there was another at the west end for east trains but it was long gone.
I only made a few trips over that track and it was in terrible shape. There was a bad area inside the tunnel you are looking at. The rail would sink, the engine would dive down and on the way back up would bottom out and head for the wall. This was at walking speed. You always closed the door because rocks would fall from the roof and land on the engine.
Im sure there are other people on here that can fill in with the right info.
