Actually, you're right - I don't really possess a grasp, if you will, of the whole grammar architecture, but I do have a sense of what is correct and incorrect, or perhaps in vogue or out of vogue. While the rest of my high school English class were diagramming sentences I was more interested in the girl sitting in front of me, so I might have missed some of the basics. Just like you "know" when a hamburger tastes good, but not "why" it does, I know what constitutes good grammar, if not why.
