Brunel had a 7' gauge railway up and running in Britain in the 19th century. It worked - it is just not interchangeable. There is nothing magical about standard gauge - neither bad nor good - it is just an agreed upon standard protocol with a huge installed base and all the incremental advantages that accrue thereupon.
