CP runaway thought..

I thought I recalled reading in the past that AC traction locomotives would endure being put into opposite direction travel without frying stuff... not knowing what all went on, but would it have been possible for the relieving crew upon relizing the train was starting to have undesired movement, put the reverser back and tried applying power? would that generate more retarding force than waiting for dynamics to get to an efficient speed, and then be overwhelmed?
