Smithville, TX. is about 40 miles southeast of Austin and is where the MKT lines from San Antonio and Houston came together and headed to points north. The lines are still active, but the line to Houston now ends in Katy, Tx., which was named for the railroad. The Katy to Houston segment was abandoned and torn out to widen I-10, otherwise known as the Katy Freeway. The Katy lives!
