I am not sure things have changed all that much apart from a great increase in population. Beef costs a fortune and so does a college education.

Californians tend to be a bit naive about corruption - maybe it's the Hollywood dream machine and Disneyland airhead influence. Back East people are more bitter, suspicious and skeptical and worried about being aced out. Archie Bunker could never be a Californian.

60 years ago the media were totally controlled by wealthy Republicans; now the situation is reversed. So the pendulum swings. Then we had McCarthyism; now we have political correctness.

I think there exists a kind of Moore's Law on technological progress and maybe civilization in general is "seasonal" and we're now in late Fall.
