Not pre-Amtrak, but nearly so. In late July or early August 1971 (so barely three months into Amtrak's existence) I was on board a 32-car combined Empire Builder/Northcoast Hiawatha between Minneapolis and Chicago. It was still using food service cars from the NP and GN days like the NP Lewis & Clark Travelers Rest and GN Ranch Car.
