civilized cities (DC, SF, Chicago) had 'safety island" mid street platforms. As tothebogus rapid transit plans, most of them spec custom left side door models for a single island platform--really dumb if ever diverted account a fire or other blockage and requiring a larger spare ratio because standard buses won't work.
