Just because it's preserved doesn't mean the prime mover needs to remain intact. I believe San Francisco Bay #25 is supposed to be preserved, minus the engine.

678's heritage before ST&E was Pacific Harbor Line and before that, Conrail. I don't know which of the Northeastern roads owned originally, but a group back there might want it.
