The reason you never saw it before it that it was always covered
by a sheet metal shroud that both protected the chain and mechanism
from road grit and from stray fingers.

They didn't want to reuse the covers ton it, and didn't have
time to make new ones in the mad rush to get it out of the shop in
time for the trip.

Those are just part of a long list of things that didn't get done.

Notice there is no lagging or jacketing on the lower half and bottom
of the boiler shell?
