Where was the caring family who put her on the train to travel alone, when they knew she could not care for herself? What were they thinking? She could easily have been victimized by some of the people who tend to ride in coach. Does her family plan to pay back the charity that paid for her air fare? Unfortunately elderly and disabled people are dumped on trains and expected to reach the other end safely. It takes a certain amount of prior knowledge and paying attention to ride Amtrak trains. Even then it can frustrate veteran Amtrak guests. Elderly and disoriented Amtrak guest have unfortunately been found many times at stations and/or on trains who clearly could not take care of themselves. Railroad employees often go out of their way to help them, but also find themselves calling the authorities.

Some disoriented guests have been known to wander of trains, even out of stations into the worst kind of neighborhoods. Other disoriented guests have been known to step off trains at speed, even though it is not that easy to open doors, they have managed to do it. Sometimes the lower level seating of Superliner cars becomes the adult diaper section, with helpless people traveling alone who thought meals were included on the train. There are car attendants who find themselves putting them on the pot, cleaning up after their personal hygiene needs. It can be very dangerous for the mobility impaired to get out of their wheelchairs, even with the extra handrails and help on a moving train. Her family should be ashamed of themselves placing their loved one in this situation.
