Lightening The Mood?

Seems the list has turned rather dour of late... thought I'd investigate a story that is possibly apocryphal - but which I've been told to be true, to see if others can either verify, or shoot it down.

As I have been told, in the early 1960s, when the fourth and fifth largest metropolitan areas in the US where in the midst of having their new subway systems planned, San Francisco's was called the Bay Area Rapid Transit District and Washington DC's was to be the Federal Area Rapid Transit District. It wasn't until an acronym was derived out of the San Francisco title that the DC system was suddenly and abruptly renamed METRO.
