While I am pleasantly surprised SMART passed I am dismayed that most of the transit projects mentioned are financed with sales tax revenue. Sales tax revenues are declining and places like Denver and Seattle are in budget trouble because revenues aren't meeting expectations.

I suspect that when a sales tax gets to 8 1/2% or higher that alone affects spending habits. I'm not sure what better alternatives there are than sales taxes for transit, but they seem to be losing their shine.
