one correction; panama's rr, and the earliest rr to folsom [i think] were laid in 5 ft guage that was fairly much standard in the south prior to the end of 1865, not five foot'russian standard' [which was built that way by sergei witte for the czar much later to impede possible german invasion]. the bartd guage is 5'6"--india's broad guage--which does bring the non-standard logistal issues.
