"The bus system is projected to operate at a $52 million deficit during the fiscal year that began in July, according to the district’s budget. Roughly $80 million will pay for bus system employees’ salaries and benefits. That cost is partially offset by revenue from bridge tolls. The district’s bridge operation is projected to bring in roughly $74 million in revenue over expenses this fiscal year, while its ferry system is projected to lose $17 million."
The ferries are expensive to operate. SMART losses can be expected to be substantial as well. With new labor contracts eventually expect fare increases on ferries, buses and trains which could reduce ridership.
