Jim Hill didn't even want to go through Spokane. His original survey had the Great Northern branching off approximately at Dean traversing the landscape north of town to approximately where Riverside Park is now and the location of the current [1974 vintage Burlington Northern] now BNSF line. The city fathers pleaded with him and tempted him with right-of-way easements. His entry to Spokane via the Spokane Falls & Northern was much more favorable as the depot was on the north side of the river - and...had he connected with Seattle, Lake Shore & Eastern at Fort Wrigt he still could have bypassed the south side of the Spokane River up to the current BNSF alignment.
Talk to ya later,
Dale Jones
