In the end the dominant manufacturer will dictate standards by dint of market share - the way Intel's x86 processor architecture rules the world of cpu's.

Emerging countries don't need the streetcar equivalent of a Duesenberg - they need the equivalent of a Range Rover or a VW beetle.
