Sunset Route Question

My wife and I recently took the Sunset to Palm Springs. Leaving LAUPT the train took the old Sunset/Golden State route along Valley Blvd. through Alhambra.

I was under the impression that the usual routing for this train is SCAX rails parallel to I-10 past the CSULA campus.

Anybody have any info?
