In the City where there were still a lot pulls near 16th & Harrision, and down near Quint St. Also had the inside pullman and the depot. The switchmen would start with the fusees. They would put as many as needed along side the track we were on. They would burn for a long time and then they would replace them. Those guys had to really keep their s..t. together, throwing those submarine switches and not getting hit by a car.
Sometimes they will even wake up a drunk. Many a time, we would go to beans before we took a cut of cars down to Bayshore. We would leave the train in the street and it would be ready when we got back. We would get back from eating and there was usually pieces of autos scattered in the street or better yet the car was still wrapped around the front of the engine.
You never got bored on those jobs.
