A crew likely wouldn't shove cars partially to their spot, then kick them to the spot. If they had a specific reason for using momentum or gravity (such as a drop), maybe. But not to spot cars like that. In today's world though, this would be forbidden on most railroad since someone would have to ride the brake to stop the cars on spot. However, kicking cars is still done on some railroads when switching, but generally after a heel/bumper is set with a couple cars with good hand brakes so the free-rolling cars have something to stop them.
