A decline initiated by Biaggini in the early 70's when it was decided a better return was available by diversifying in telecom, real estate, and pipelines.
Not unreasonable considering he was witnessing the collapse of the eastern roads followed by some in the Midwest.
By the time deregulation finally came along, it was already too late. The failed merger with ATSF was the final straw.
