This is an interesting history of Israeli railroads that a friend sent to me. It is an interesting part of the regional history in its own right (Ottomans, WWI, Lawrence of Arabia...). And, for the recent history, as almost all expansion in recent times, is for passenger service to compete with increasingly congested highway network.
