Well, there is a little difference between an aircraft getting in trouble and a train.
Railroads are intrinsically fail-safe (well mostly), whereas Aircrafts are not. As another poster states, there are good reasons for having a backup operator on an aircraft, because it won't be able to safely stop.
But there is absolutely no need for a backup operator in a system which does/can stop safely.
And keep in mind that in the civilized world trains, no matter what kind, are operated single-manned. (the exception is in Italy, where the unions enforced a second man in the cab for more or less any type of operation).
