Norfolk Southern Corporation deadheaded their business train from Altoona, PA to Charlotte, NC on July 24, 2008 to position it for a VIP trip to Raleigh on the following weekend. The deadhead move, symboled as NS train No. 955, was powered by all four of Norfolk Southern?s F9s, arranged in classic A-B-B-A formation. The train was routed east from Altoona on the former Pennsylvania Railroad main to Harrisburg, PA, where it diverged onto the ex-PRR Lurgan Line and headed south to Hagerstown, MD. After a crew change at Hagerstown it continued south on the former Norfolk &Western?s Shendandoah Sub to Riverton Junction at Front Royal, VA, and then headed east on the former Southern Railway?s Manassas Gap branch, which is now NS?s "B Line". At Manassas the train diverged onto the former Southern Railway main and headed south Charlotte. The train was comprised of 11 NS business cars, including full-length dome Delaware, all painted Tuscan Red.
