Cost had/has nothing to do with the main reason "straight water" is used in EMC/EMD diesel engines (that 'straight water' includes a corrosion inhibiter, so it really isn't just 'straight water') is,,,,,,,,,it cools much better than any sort of anti-freeze treatment. Thus, EMD engines in stationary power usage, which need an anti-freeze treatment, must be de-rated in horse power.
