What the article misses is that BART *is* automated, and has been since it opened. The "drivers" make announcements (though that's probably - or should be - automated by now), hold the doors open, and watch for emergencies that might require the big red stop button. Otherwise, the train drives itself. If people wouldn't rush the doors, and there were enough trains that people wouldn't panic about being 1/2 hour or more late if they can't get on one, it would just be a horizontal elevator.
