My take is that CAT is recognizable as heavy construction equipment whereas not so much Progress Rail but EMD is an industry icon.

More recently Progress Rail has ventured into most all areas of railroad equipment, maintenance and supply. They have been buying out maintenance of way equipment manufacturers and rebuilders with no end in sight. The only major supplier they have not acquired is HARSCO RAIL (the union of Fairmont; Pandrol-Jackson-Jordan and Canron).

We will always refer to our locomotives whether built in Canada or USA as "EMD's"
