As Freericks said, I always heard it called the "Mating Worms" logo.
I recall having a patch with the much less common two color version, with the P in red and the C in white.

Still, no matter what you call the logo, that photo does a wonderful job of capturing what railroading was like in those days. That dark and gritty look, almost black and white, shows what it was then.
