Switching 3-cylinder engines for a moment, enjoy a 1953 ride behind Greley A4 Pacific non-stop from London to Edinburgh. The Silver Fox, 60017 (previously numbered 2512) reached a speed of almost 113 mph in August 1936, making it the highest recorded regularly-scheduled speed at the time. Sister engine, Mallard, of course, holds the world speed record for steam of 126 mph on July 3, 1938). Several of these wonderful locomotives survive and remain in service. Sadly Silver Fox was retired in 1963 and subsequently scrapped although one of the foxes that were once on its boiler are on display at the museum in York.
