I was on that train. We were detouring because of a slide on the SP near Cascade Summit. The regular SP crew (no Amtrak operating crews yet)got on at Klamath Falls. At Chemult a BN pilot crew got on and stayed with the train down the Deschutes to OT Junction. There a UP pilot crew took over from the BN pilot. It was decided to run by way of the UP so the train would be headed in the correct direction in Portland. The BN crew stayed on the train as a dead head to Portland.
The SP (Amtrak) crew died at Troutdale and another SP crew (Amtrak) took over for the short trip into Portland. At one time we had two Amtrak crews, one BN pilot and one UP pilot crew on board. This consisted of four engineers, 4 firemen, 8 brake men from three railroads.
