Re-creating an historic paint job can be justified. There's a recreated ATSF F7 at the museum in Frisco, TX that is beautiful:

Some people were sad when NW Ry Museum scrapped an ex-Kennecott electric locomotive. Scrapping stuff is a little harder to justify, yet museums regularly scrap things with enthusiasm.
