Did it in 1981 with my girlfriend

When I was courting my now wife, back in 1981, I knew she appreciated trains (if not exactly a "railfan"), because of the stories her father and grandfather told of their years working on Southern Pacific section gangs.

So. I thought of a nearly all-rail date. We were both working in downtown San Francisco at the time, so here's what we did:

-- MUNI bus to the 4th & Townsend SP (now Caltrain) station. Took SP commute train to San Jose. (No streetcar/LRV service to the station at the time.)
-- Boarded northbound Amtrak Coast Starlight in San Jose. I had reserved coach seats, but we went straight to the diner for a fine dinner.
-- Got off at Richmond, to take BART to our respective homes.

One of my favorite dates ever!
