A further glance at the Google Map link shows that neither of the 2 RR bridges actually crossed Salmon Bay; the NP bridge crossed The Ship Canal, while the former GN " Salmon Bay " bridge ( now BNSF's Bridge 4 ) crossed the far S.E. portion of Shilsole Bay.
The Ballard Locks and the Ship Canal, and the Montlake Cut were part of a massive project 100+ years ago to link all of Seattle's fresh water lakes with Puget Sound. Doing so lowered the water level of Lake Washington by 10 feet or more. One of the rejected routes to salt water would have gone through today's BNSF Interbay Yard area.
